A study of critical value analysis at hematology and biochemistry sections of laboratory in a multispeciality hospital

The issue of laboratory critical value (CV) reporting has gained importance in the recent times due to national focus on patient safety. Critical notification (CVN) become an essential part accreditation procedures for medical laboratories, including universally accepted International Organization Standardization (ISO) 15189: 2012. Our study aimedto analyze data hematology and biochemistry sections laboratory, compare frequencies values different parameters suggest measures improving effectiveness operational efficiency process. was a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive done over period one year six months (January 2020 June 2021). chosen CVN included platelets, hemoglobin Normalized Ratio (INR) from section creatinine, glucose, sodium, potassium calcium section. A test result that significantly outside normal range required immediate communication considered as “critical (CV)”. Both verbal (through telephone) non-verbal [through short message service (SMS)] processes were implemented our lab. We also followed practice CV “read-back” by person who informed phone. total 2199 reported. maximum 1224 (55.7%) recorded emergency department. CVs highest (1898, 86.3%) Analyte most commonly notified creatinine (1151, 52.3%). CVNs morning shifts (1378, 62.7%). Implementation alert (SMS) send outs greatly helped us reducing turn around time (TAT). successfully demonstrated both CVs.
